House is a style of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago, Illinois, USA in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was initially popularized in mid-1980sdiscothèques catering to the African-American,^[1] Latino,^[1] and gay^[1]^[2]^[3] communities, first in Chicago, then in New York City and Detroit. It eventually reached Europe before becoming infused in mainstream pop & dance music worldwide.

House is strongly influenced by elements of soul- and funk-infused varieties of disco. House generally mimics disco's percussion, especially the use of a prominent bass drum on every beat, but may feature a prominent synthesizer bassline, electronic drums, electronic effects, funk and pop samples, andreverb- or delay-enhanced vocals.

The hypnotic electronic dance song "On and On", produced in 1984 by Chicago DJ Jesse Saunders and co-written by Vince Lawrence, had elements that became staples of the early house sound, such as the 303 bass synthesizer and minimal vocals. It is sometimes cited as the 'first house record',^[4]^[5] although other examples from the same time period, such as J.M. Silk's "Music is the Key" (1985) have also been cited.^[6]

Etymology

The origins of the term "house" are disputed.

The term may have its origin from a Chicago nightclub called the The Warehouse which existed from 1977 to 1982. The Warehouse was patronized primarily by gay black and Latino men,^[3] who came to dance to disco music played by the club's resident DJ, Frankie Knuckles. Although Knuckles left the club in 1982 and it was renamed Music Box, the term "house", short for Warehouse, is said to have become popular among Chicagoans as being synonymous with Knuckles' musical selections as a DJ before becoming associated with his own dance music productions, even though those didn't begin until well after the closure of The Warehouse.

Chip E.'s 1985 recording "It's House" may also have helped to define this new form of electronic music.^[7] However, Chip E. himself lends credence to the Knuckles association, claiming the name came from methods of labelling records at the Importes Etc. record store, where he worked in the early 1980s: bins of music that DJ Knuckles played at the Warehouse nightclub was labelled in the store "As Heard At The Warehouse", which was shortened to simply "House". Patrons later asked for new music for the bins, which Chip E. implies was a demand the shop tried to meet by stocking newer local club hits.^[8]

Larry Heard, aka "Mr. Fingers", claims^{[citation needed]} that the term "house" reflected the fact that many early DJs created music in their own homes, using synthesizers and drum machines, including the Roland TR-808, TR-909, and the TB 303 Bassline synthesizer-sequencer. These synthesizers were used to create a house subgenre called acid house.^[9]

Juan Atkins, an originator of Detroit techno music, claims the term "house" reflected the exclusive association of particular tracks with particular DJs; those tracks were their "house" records (much like a restaurant might have a "house" salad dressing).^[10]

This last reference goes in hand with the idea that as disco music began to lose popularity many club DJ's or 'House DJ's' replaced the originals with these newer stripped down versions of disco hits, still incorporating the high energy elements to create this new sound.

Clive Campbell (born April 16, 1955), also known as Kool Herc, DJ Kool Herc and Kool DJ Herc, is a Jamaican-born DJ who is credited with originatinghip hop music, in the Bronx, New York City. His playing of hard funk records of the sort typified by James Brown was an alternative both to the violent gang culture of the Bronx and to the nascent popularity of disco in the 1970s. In 1972, in response to the reactions of his dancers, Campbell began to isolate the instrumental portion of the record which emphasized the drum beat—the "break"—and switch from one break to another to yet another.

He broke up different records and put them together with other records so he could play breaks from different songs on the same record.. This breakbeatDJing, using hard funk, rock, and records with Latin percussion, formed the basis of hip hop music. Campbell's announcements and exhortations to dancers helped lead to the syncopated, rhymed spoken accompaniment now known as rapping. He called his dancers "break-boys" and "break-girls", or simply b-boys and b-girls. Although he did not come up with these terms he used them often when making his toasts to the crowd. Campbell's DJ style was quickly taken up by figures such as Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash. Unlike them, he never made the move into commercially recorded hip hop in its earliest years.

He & his sister told me some stories of their first parties...she would make up these flyers ..25 cents for the ladies, 50 cents for the fellas....

i flew in this past week 2 be a guest judge on a new reality fashion show (coming soooon) called Concrete & Cashmere ..

i had the pleasure of staying in the LES this time around as i usually stay uptown...the Thompson has opened its newest telly there & it is off the dayum chain.

they hooked a sista up royally & gave me a room with these views...not 2 mention the rooms are nice & ah rooomy !! as opposed 2 the usual fancy coffins u find in most ny boutique hotels..

me & Maya (Boxing Kitten) went shopping & she dressed me for the show, & my life in general...she's a ray of sunshine

i also went shopping with another of my fav new yorkers Damon ( Legendary) ... he also lights up the life

He's makes me proud 2 be a "fashion victim":)

nyway as we marched on trying 2 make it 2 virgin store before it closed (for the night we thought) hoping to find a discounted Sign O' the times dvd, & the new Mos Def album we came upon this :(

Def a landmark of the city in my mind ,as my first trips 2 union square consisted of me starring at the ever changing row of numbers on the gigantic clock ,contemplating time, my life, & other random deep thoughtery im sure... sad , first it was all my fav lil hole in the wall record shops & now even giants don't stand a chance...wow..sign of the times indeed...

NYC was fun of course & got 2 kick it with some of my ATL peeps amongst others. Thats what i love about the NY ..u will mos def run into people from all stages of ur life..Random .Speaking of which i ran into my dude Nito is currently working on a documenteray about MOs Def... looking 4 ward to that fsho check out his site & all his projects here.

Another highlight of my trip was linking with the homie Ahmir (QuestLove) of the Legendary Roots Crew...as u may know they have a very sweet gig now on The Jimmy Fallon show as prob the illest house band / co-hosts (ever??) no disrespect to Max Weinberg (Love u COnan!)...anyhoo hearing them play is always a treat, hearing Black Thought SING is even better...anyway i sat in on their rehersal, heres my pics (not very good as i was trying 2 be incognegro being i was the only person sitting in audience) and some shots of me & Ahmir taking advantage of 30 rocks cafeteria !! its BOMB ,really...the last time i was there was for Prince's performance on Saturday Night Live. We got down. As a food aficionado i must say any cafeteria with 2 multi flavor frozen yogurt machines always get two thumbs up...nyway grubbing , exchanging music and hearing one of ur fav bands rehearse =a great day.

a few weeks ago i had the pleasure of performing on The Tonight Show with Prince & the Fam... i scratched,i danced. we had fun as always & towards the end some of my speeecial friends even came up & joined in!!:) Moni,Esthero (strawberry shortcake:), Shels, Jack & Brooke(J*davey). then we went and had jamaican food & lots of gingerbeer & rum..mmmmm

i forgot to mention the DRESS...

ah the Dress, provided by the House of Petrozillia. A chiffon, gold chained ,sculpted dream.

-played twice at the homie Rob Wonders club "EL BAR" & kicked it with my folks from waaaaaaay back in the day

- went to high school & art school in the A, so just about someone from every phase of my southern life came out...eye opening to say the least

hmmm, well i guess we'll start with my latest exploits. shall we..

i've just arrived home in LA after being gone for 3 weeks.

i went to Koh Chang,Bangkok,NYC, & Atlanta.

in NYC i......

-was invited to play "Soul Slam" (Prince & MJ all night) with the incomparable DJ Spinna (which mind u was very big for me because i know he doesn't play with just anybody & he's one of my fav dj's of all time!!!!!)

-looked like a member of Rashida 6 , Spinna looked like he stepped off the set of "Say Say Say"

-played the Prince, he played the MJ

-played from 10-430 am, there were 500 ppl wrapped around the block b4 the doors opened!

- think it's great that ppl like Puff Did, & Ed Lover came thru & lost their minds..

-LOVE that Fab, Q-tip, Grand Puba, & Estelle, Om'aas & other familiar faces came thru & also gave it up 2 the music..

-LOVE that Grey Ant dressed me 4 the occasion :)
